Building up to new leisure facilities in West Bridgford

13 January 2016

Rushcliffe Borough Council welcomed in the New Year by breaking ground on the Rushcliffe Arena site in West Bridgford.

Leader of Rushcliffe Borough Council, Councillor Neil Clarke, Councillor Simon Robinson, Portfolio Holder for Finance and Economy and Councillor John Cottee, Portfolio Holder for Community Services, officially got the building work off to a good start on Tuesday 12 January, now that work to prepare the site has been completed. The project is still on track following the unfortunate arson incident that occurred in September as the site was being prepared for demolition works.

Once finished, the Leisure Centre, which is due to open in January 2017, will house a 25m pool, a beach-themed fun pool, modern gym and fitness studios, bowls rink, sports hall and squash courts, snooker and wellness rooms. The new Leisure Centre will be run and managed by Parkwood Leisure.

Work on the two storey, 8,000 square metre building is being done by Farrans Construction on the same site as the original Rushcliffe Arena leisure centre on Rugby Road. The redevelopment of the site also gives the Council a chance to relocate its offices to a smaller, more efficient site which will save money and free up the Civic Centre on Pavilion Road in West Bridgford for alternative uses.

Leader of Rushcliffe Borough Council, Cllr Neil Clarke said: “It’s fantastic to get to the next milestone in building this new facility, especially since the fire last year. Everyone has worked hard to ensure that construction is still on track. In just a year, the Arena will re-open, providing brilliant leisure facilities and adding to the excellent provision of sport within the Borough. It will also give the Council a modern, fit for purpose workspace – something that is important to our long term vision and key in helping us continue to deliver efficient and effective services.”

Glen Hall, Parkwood Leisure Regional Director said: “Whilst the building works continue at the Arena site,  preparation will take place behind the scenes to ensure a fantastic journey to a modern leisure facility in 2017. These are exciting times for the future of leisure and recreation opportunities for everyone in Rushcliffe.”

Darrell Mc Guckian, Operations Director at Farrans Construction said: “We are proud to have reached this key milestone in the regeneration of Rushcliffe Arena as a vital community facility. We are looking forward to delivering a high quality facility that will exceed expectations.”

Peter Orton, Director of Turner and Townsend who are project managing the development, said: “We’re pleased to support Rushcliffe Borough Council with the development of this prestigious scheme. I for one am excited to see the impact of this top quality leisure centre on the local community – it will truly be a facility ‘fit for the future’.”
