Showcasing great borough businesses
Bet you didn’t know?
There are many Rushcliffe businesses which are hidden gems. We aim to showcase great borough businesses to hopefully boost borough business.
A Rushcliffe company is planning to expand after achieving commercial success with a highly unusual business model.
Arch Communications is a PR and marketing agency which operates as a social enterprise. This means that the firm is committed to working for community benefit and giving away at least 10% of its annual profit.
Since it began in 2011, Arch has invested more than £40,000 in local good causes through donations and unpaid work. These include sponsoring last year’s Ashes volunteer programme at Trent Bridge and funding environmental improvements in the company’s home village of East Leake.
Arch Communications offers a wide range of services, ranging from copywriting and press releases to marketing strategies, crisis management and media training. Clients range from global companies, universities and national government programmes, to small local firms and charities.
With business on the rise, the company will be recruiting new staff in 2014 and has committed to staying in East Leake.
It was founded by former award-winning BBC East Midlands Today journalist Matt Youdale. He said: “Our job is to work out an organisation’s story, plan how best to tell it and then make it happen - to raise their profile and make them more successful.
“I like to describe Arch Communications as a PR company with a conscience. I love what I do, and it’s great to be able to help local causes at the same time. It just makes the job even more satisfying!”
Matt has also set up the thriving East Leake Business Group, which meets at 8am on the second Thursday of every month at Bryer’s coffee shop in the village. All Rushcliffe businesses are welcome to attend.

A leading light in office supplies – it’s Torch
Started in 2011 by Tina Byford, her third year of trading has seen her husband Chris join the company to cope with the increased demand. Chris has a background with blue chip companies such as Tom Tom, HP and Epson. Torch is a one-stop-shop for everything in an office – from toilet rolls to pens, tea and coffee to paper, printing ink and even plastic plants! In their catalogue there are over 22,000 products to give a total office solutions approach, but they can still offer a tailored solution. Tina has over 20 years experience in office supplies in roles from business development to sales management and training.
Tina explains her drive to set up her own company: “I hit 40 and thought well it’s now or never and time for a change. My husband was very supportive and so I took the plunge. It has been a steep learning curve and as I have grown I now find that I need help – there’s only so much one person can do! Chris will join me and then we can grow organically. As a business owner you have to be a master of everything - sales person, purchasing, accounts and customer service to name just a few.
"The future certainly looks bright – we are about to overhaul our website and back office systems, and hope to win lots of new clients. However, the most important factor which really sets our business apart I think is the fact that we understand that people do business with people and that the human touch is vital.”
