Request

I am seeking data and or information with regards to equines that are abandoned and end up fly grazing across the Borough of Rushcliffe.

  1. Data, the number of abandoned fly grazing horses for the years 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024.
  2. The most effective solutions that Rushcliffe Borough Council use to combat this welfare issue.

Response

Rushcliffe Borough council is not a highway authority and will only respond to such issues when on its land, in all other cases we would advise or refer to the relevant highway authority/landowner.

  1. Data, the number of abandoned fly grazing horses for the years 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024. A search of the complains system indicates no complaints of fly grazing reported to this LA in the time period requested. nil for each year.
  2. The most effective solutions that Rushcliffe Borough Council use to combat this welfare issue. It is likely we would encourage any horse owner to remove any horses in the first instance if on council owned land without permission. We are aware of the legislation and would adopt a case-by-case basis for using any other powers if this did not succeed. We have no examples to provide a cost analysis.
