Record of Decision Taken by David Banks on 18 February 2025

Details of Decision:

The cessation of the Council’s out of hours standby service for the collection and kennelling of stray dogs effective from 01 April 2025.

Authority for decision

Delegated Authority of the Executive Director, Neighbourhoods

Decision

The cessation of the Council’s out of hours standby service for the collection and kennelling of stray dogs effective from 01 April 2025.

Reasons for decision

The financial cost of providing a standby stray dog collection service is disproportionate to the numbers of call outs.

In 2024 we only collected 8 dogs out of normal hours. One of our 2 animal wardens is on standby and in 2024 these payments amounted to £10K equating to £1,250 per dog collected.

Alternative options considered and rejected

To continue providing the service would not be good value. Officers will explore options to deliver a collection point for residents to take a stray dog found out of hours. The risk is considered low.

Conflicts of interest and any dispensation

None identified.
