Disruption to Services

Contents

What to do when services are disrupted

Although we always try to keep disruption to an absolute minimum, there are occasions when circumstances outside our control (e.g. severe weather) can affect the services we provide.

We will do our utmost to inform people of any potential disruption. However, if you have any queries or concerns about a service you receive, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Severe weather

The Met Office’s National Severe Weather Warning Service (NSWWS) provides warnings of hazardous weather conditions.

The Environment Agency publishes a summary of flood warnings and river levels. Residents and businesses at risk of fluvial flooding are encouraged to register for warnings from the Floodline service. For further information on flooding, please refer to our frequently asked questions.

Seasonal driving advice is available from the AA and RAC. A map of gritting routes is available on Nottinghamshire County Council’s website.

Advice on animal welfare during severe weather is available from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra).

If you need to report disruption to utility supplies, please contact the following:

Be prepared for winter - advice from the Highways Agency

Help to prepare you for your journey in the case of adverse weather this winter

Have you planned your journey?

In the winter, it's even more important to plan journeys. We provide traffic reports - check information services before you travel.

Before you set off

Our website includes traffic reports, traffic flows, average speeds and the displays on motorway signs.

Stick to main roads where you can and avoid exposed routes.

Drive with care and respect the road conditions. It takes time to clear and treat roads with salt to reduce the risk of ice.  Give snowploughs and crew space they need to help get you on the way. Avoid steep hills and exposed roads if possible.

Check weather updates

Check the weather at Met Office website or listen to local radio broadcasts.

Timing

Allow extra time for journeys in severe weather.

Is your vehicle ready for winter?

Check that your vehicle is in good running order before travelling.

Use POWDERY:

  • PETROL (or diesel) Is there enough in the tank?
  • OIL - check once a month
  • WATER - check radiator and screenwash once a month
  • DAMAGE - check wipers, lights etc for signs of damage
  • ELECTRICS - check lights, indicators and controls are working
  • RUBBER TYRES - Well inflated, good tread and undamaged?
  • YOURSELF - Are you fit to drive?

Make sure pets are safe and not distracting in cars.

Carry an emergency kit

  • Ice scraper and de-icer
  • Torch and spare batteries – or wind-up torch
  • Warm clothes and blankets - for you and all passengers
  • Boots
  • First aid kit
  • Jump leads
  • A shovel
  • Road atlas
  • Sunglasses (the glare off snow can be dazzling).

Road and weather conditions may change

Use the Highways Agency's information services to check for delays and weather. Pay attention to changing road conditions and take care on bends and exposed roads.
