Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG)
Rushcliffe Borough Council provides Disabled Facilities Grants (DFG) to help towards the cost of making changes to your home to make it safer, easier to get around and carry out everyday tasks.
What is the grant for?
Grants are available for many different adaptations including:
- install ramps, handrails and widen doors
- install stair lifts or through floor lifts
- level access showers
- improve access to your garden
- build an extension, for example a downstairs bedroom or bathroom
Am I eligible?
To apply for a grant, you or someone else living in the property must:
- be disabled
- intend to live in the property for 5 years after the works are completed
The person who submits the application must be either the:
- owner of the property
- tenant of a private rented or housing association property
- landlord of a disabled tenant
The council needs to be happy that the adaptation work is:
- necessary and appropriate to meet the needs of the disabled person
- reasonable and can be done, based on the condition of the property
How much could I get?
The maximum mandatory grant limit is £30,000. The amount of grant you are awarded depends on your household income and household savings. A means test will be carried out, based on the outcome you may need to pay a contribution towards the cost of the works. If your contribution exceeds the cost of the works, you will not be entitled to a grant.
Disabled children under 18 can get a grant without their family’s income being taken into account.
How do I apply?
Make contact with Nottinghamshire County Council, one of their occupational therapy workers will carry out an assessment with you. They will recommend what work is needed to help you to live independently in your home. If adaptations are required, they will make a referral to Rushcliffe Borough Council who may help fund the adaptations through a Disabled Facilities Grant.
To apply call Nottinghamshire County Council on 0300 500 8080.

Handy Person Adaptations Service (HPAS)
If you are over 60 or you have a disability and live in Nottinghamshire, the Handy Person Adaptation Service (HPAS) provides help and support to keep you safe and independent in your home with small practical jobs and essential adaptations.
Handy person jobs
These are small jobs such as fixing curtain rails, changing light bulbs, fitting door locks, fixing loose carpets to remove trip hazards or fitting a key safe to enable access for family or carers who visit you.
The cost of a handy person job is currently £15. You will also need to supply all the materials for the job. But if you have difficulty getting what’s needed, you may be able to give the money to the trader so they can buy the materials for you.
Adaptations
If you own your home or rent from a private landlord, HPAS can supply and fit small adaptations free of charge to help you to remain living independently. These include:
- An additional internal stair rail
- Internal grab rails
- Exterior grab rails
If you rent from a housing association, you should contact them directly about adaptations.
To apply for Handy Person jobs or the Adaptations service call Nottinghamshire County Council on 0300 500 80 80.
