Housing Advice for Homeowners

Paying Your Mortgage

If you're having financial problems, you should talk to your mortgage company as early as possible. You should also seek professional debt advice. For further information and advice contact us.

If you are claiming certain benefits, for example:

  • Income Support
  • Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Employment Support Allowance
  • Pension Credit

You may be able to get Support for Mortgage Interest. This is a loan that will pay some or all of the interest on your mortgage. With a repayment holiday from your lender, this may provide an option that enables you to stay in your home.

You can find lots of useful advice about how to deal with mortgage arrears on the Money Advice Service website. They publish a free leaflet in PDF format, called Problems Paying Your Mortgage. Depending on your circumstances, there are a number of options that may help you.

Adapting Your Home

If you are disabled and you need to adapt your home, for example:

  • by having a stairlift installed; or
  • a walk-in shower fitted,

you may be eligible for a Disabled Facilities Grant to help with the cost of the work. You can find more information in the Disabled Facilities Grant page. The first thing you need to do is to speak to an occupational therapist. Nottinghamshire County Council provide this service - email enquiries@nottscc.gov.uk or call 0300 500 8080

If you are disabled or aged over 60 and have jobs about the home that you are struggling with, you can contact the Nottinghamshire Handyperson and Preventative Adaptation Service (HPAS). They can help you to find a trader to do the work you need at an affordable price. They can also advise on minor adaptations to help you get around your home, such as grab rails and half steps. For more details, call 0300 500 8080, email enquiries@nottscc.gov.uk

There are no longer other grants or loans available to improve the condition of your home.

Keeping Your Home Warm

Improving the energy efficiency of your home will help you to save money and keep warm. As fuel prices continue to rise, it makes sense to make sure your home is fully insulated. You will also be helping to reduce your impact on the environment and prevent climate change. You can find information in the energy efficiency section of our website.
