Health and social community hub launches in West Bridgford on September 23

Last updated: 18/9/2024

A new community hub in West Bridgford is set to launch on Monday September 23, offering a variety of free activities designed to improve people’s physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

The hub at the West Bridgford Young People Centre on Bridgford Road in the town will be open every Monday starting from September 23 from 10am to 4pm for the community to gather, connect, and thrive through activities, information sessions and meet-ups.

Rushcliffe Borough Council allocated funding from the West Bridgford Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) to support the project which aims to create a healthier and more connected community.

Community Connections Café will take place from 10am to midday each week where residents can enjoy a hot beverage, make new connections and speak to a member of the Rushcliffe Social Prescribing team to find out more on local activities, groups and services.

Activities on September 23 include water colour painting and the launch of the Balance your Mind Programme from 12pm to 2pm, a four-week programme focused on helping you to manage your thoughts and emotions, relax your body and develop a positive mindset.

To book a free place on the programme, which runs every Monday until October 14, visit the Try Booking website. Participants are required to be available for all sessions.

All information on activities, including session times, will be available via the Rushcliffe Social Prescribing Facebook page. For any questions, please email RBC’s Health Development Officer Sofi Melvin at smelvin@rushcliffe.gov.uk.

Further free activities running throughout the year include:

  • Breathwork Sessions: Learn the art of mindful breathing to reduce stress and enhance relaxation

  • Sound Bath: Immerse yourself in sounds that promote deep meditation and relaxation.
  • Cooking Classes: Discover nutritious recipes and cooking techniques that support a healthy lifestyle

  • Psychological Wellness Workshops: Engage in sessions that support mental health and emotional resilience

The hub will be a safe and welcoming space for individuals experiencing social isolation, offering structured activities and informal social opportunities.

It will host community events, workshops, and seminars focused on health, wellbeing, and social connection.

RBC’s Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Planning and Housing Cllr Roger Upton said: “We’re pleased to see this vital project launching soon in West Bridgford, which will offer a variety of health and wellbeing advice and support to residents through socialising, activities, information sessions, coffee mornings and more.

“The community hub will help to reduce social isolation and loneliness by bringing people together, whether they want to chat over a hot drink, attend a pop-in information session or take part in the array of activities on offer from cooking classes to dance sessions!

“It will act as a resource centre, with the social prescribing team offering information and guidance to enhance health and wellbeing and residents can come along to a regular morning ‘drop in’ session called Community Connections Café to find out more.

“If anyone is looking for further health and wellbeing support in the Borough, I encourage you to visit the Community Hub, say hello to the friendly Rushcliffe Social Prescribing team and get involved!”

Rushcliffe Social Prescribing Team Lead Morgan Sharpe added: “One of the main aims of the hub is to offer inclusive care and a variety of activities designed to improve mental health and wellbeing.

“We want to provide a broader approach to healthcare services, ensuring that everyone in the community has access to the support they need. By focusing on holistic care, we hope to create a welcoming space where residents can connect, learn and thrive.

“Our goal is to make a real difference in people’s lives by addressing not just physical health, but emotional and social wellbeing as well.

“We look forward to meeting residents on Monday, and we’re delighted to welcome an array of activities for you to get involved in.

“I’d like to say a special thank you to local resident Christy Chow who has generously donated an array of digital colouring pages including an ocean themed colouring book and an interactive Halloween colouring book, to the community hub.

“Colouring can be a powerful tool for promoting mindfulness and reducing anxiety, and I’m sure it would be well received by those who visit our hub!”
