Householders fined over £700 for their domestic rubbish dumped in bridleway

Last updated: 15/8/2024

Three people have been issued with fines of over £700 after more than 20 bags of their domestic waste was found strewn across a countryside bridleway, blighting the area for local people and visitors.

Rushcliffe Borough Council(RBC) found they had used the same unscrupulous waste carrier without checking who they were employing to take away their waste with the items later dumped near the path off Loughborough Road in Ruddington.

Enforcement officers from the Council’s contractors WISE, Waste Investigations Support & Enforcement, found evidence and tracked down the individuals to addresses in Wollaton, Derby and Rotherham.

Several fixed penalty notices were then issued for domestic Duty of Care and Fly-Tipping offences breaching Householder Duty of Care and to the waste carrier who dumped the items.

None of the individuals checked whether they were using a registered waste carrier, and whether they would be transferring their waste to an authorised person, a legal requirement before anything can be taken away or disposed of from any residential or business address.

Anyone can check the register on the Environment Agency website or by calling 03708 506 506 to ensure who carries waste and/or disposes of it is licensed.

Caution is advised if selecting a company from a social media site given the increased risk of fraudulent or unlicensed traders.

Other ways of disposing of unwanted items include:

  • Book RBC’s Bulky Waste Collection at www.rushcliffe.gov.uk or call 0115 981 9911
  • Take it to a household waste recycling sites operated by the County Council, find out a list of local sites including Rugby Road in West Bridgford.
  • Donate them to charity.

Rushcliffe Borough Council’s Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Environment and Safety Cllr Rob Inglis said: “The waste carrier should hang their head in shame, fly-tipping items in this manner is never acceptable and that’s why we took swift action with this penalty notice.

“If you’re a householder remember to always check who you employ to dispose of your waste from your home or you could also face a penalty notice just as these three individuals have.

“Checking whether a waste carrier is registered before you employ them is playing your part to keep Rushcliffe free of this horrendous waste.

“Action will always be taken on fly-tippers who blight our beautiful countryside and rural areas like this, it’s sadly just one of many tips investigated weekly by WISE.

“Prosecutions and fines will always follow where evidence leads back to those who have illegally dumped items.

“We have previously seized and destroyed vehicles used in fly-tips too, we have a zero-tolerance approach no matter how small the amount may be.”
