Rushcliffe Borough Council propose no part of Rushcliffe should join Nottingham City, and residents should have a say on any final proposal for changes to local councils.
Councillors at Rushcliffe Borough Council will consider recommendations on the future of local Councils in Nottinghamshire, following the Government’s announcement on Local Government Reorganisation.
The Government have written to all Councils asking them to work on proposals that would see all Borough and District Councils abolished, and new Unitary Councils replacing the existing Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Councils, which would undertake all the services both tiers of councils currently deliver.
The report being presented at the Extraordinary meeting of Rushcliffe Borough Council on March 20th recommends the interim plan drawn up by councils across Nottinghamshire and Nottingham City be submitted to the Government, along with a proposal which would see Nottingham City stay as it is and the rest of Nottinghamshire split into two smaller councils. The report also outlines the view that the Council does not support any of the Borough of Rushcliffe joining a new authority with Nottingham City Council, and that the residents should be consulted on any final plan before submission to the Government in November.
Cllr Neil Clarke MBE, Leader of Rushcliffe Borough Council, says his objective is protecting the residents of Rushcliffe. “We know that in Rushcliffe, residents pay the lowest Council Tax for the borough or district element in Nottinghamshire and have top quality services. This could change with the proposed abolition of this Council, which we do not want to see happen but seems to be the will of the Government.”
“I hope all Councillors can support the view that we want to protect residents and the services we have as much as possible. Given this policy was not in any manifesto at the general election, I believe all residents should be consulted on the biggest shake up to local councils in 50 years, so we will be calling upon the Government to give residents that voice.”
