Last updated: 22/6/2023Rushcliffe Borough Council has joined organisations across the country to raise a flag to commemorate Armed Forces Week.
Councillors and local dignitaries gathered at Rushcliffe Arena yesterday (June 19) to watch the ceremonial flag raising.
Mayor of Rushcliffe Cllr Debbie Mason was joined by fellow members of the Council, representatives of the Royal British Legion including those from Gotham, Colston Bassett, Owthorpe and Cotgrave, Granby, Barnstone and District, Bingham and Radcliffe on Trent and Council officers.
Armed Forces Week is an opportunity for everyone to show their support for those defending the UK and its interests as part of the Armed Forces community, which includes current service people, veterans, cadets, and their families.
Celebrations also include Armed Forces Day which takes place this Saturday (June 24) and on the final Saturday in June each year, to help boost morale for service members and as a chance for communities to show their recognition.
In Rushcliffe it is again further marked by Saturday’s Proms in the Park event from 12.30pm to 9pm at Bridgford Park in West Bridgford, visit our event webpage for more information.
The Mayor said: “I’m honoured to raise the Armed Forces Day flag at Rushcliffe Arena to mark the week of celebration of our Armed Forces.
“The flag sends a clear message that will be appreciated by all our past and present service personnel.
“Our Armed Forces and Veterans rightly deserve the nation’s support and recognition. They, and their families, have made and continue to make huge personal sacrifices to ensure the interests of our country are defended and this day is our chance to say thank you.
“This week we will reflect and celebrate our veterans’ achievements, what our current personnel continue to achieve and the opportunities the Armed Forces offer future generations.”
