Vape bins rolled out at Rushcliffe Leisure Centres

Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) has launched a disposable vape collection trial in partnership with Veolia and Lex Leisure, with vape bins placed at some local Leisure Centre sites to assist with the proper disposal of the devices.
Single use vapes will become illegal in the UK on June 1, 2025 and in an effort to help combat the incorrect disposal, the self-extinguishing bins have now been set up at Rushcliffe Arena in West Bridgford, Bingham Arena, Keyworth Leisure Centre and Cotgrave Leisure Centre.
A 2023 report from Material Focus found that over 30 million single use vapes are bought per month in the UK with only 17% of buyers stating that they recycle the devices.
The project by RBC and Veolia aims to help residents make the safe choice of correctly recycling their vapes and combat 73% of UK vapers who simply bin their single use vapes which can cause waste fires in waste collection vehicles and facilities.
The contents of the bins will be collected and transferred to Veolia’s treatment partner Haz Tech where the vapes are manually dismantled with the materials such as plastic tips, LED tips and batteries recycled.
RBC’s Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Environment and Safety Cllr Rob Inglis said: “It is great that we are taking steps to help combat the incorrect disposal of single use vapes.
“With their mass popularity, it is essential that we provide residents the options to correctly dispose of their devices in a safe and environmentally friendly manner, help combat the risk of waste fires and allow the parts to be recycled.”
