West Leake Village Hall roof repairs completed with support from REPF

Last updated: 21/2/2025

West Leake Village Hall has undergone essential roof repairs and improvements to enable the venue to continue to offer a welcoming space and social hub for its local rural communities.

Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) allocated nearly £11,000 of its Rural England Prosperity Fund (REPF) to the project matched with £4,650 from the Village Hall Committee to replace the roof, addressing leaks, damp and heat loss. It has helped to sustain the venue for years to come while minimising carbon emissions with improved roof insulation.

The Committee has also redecorated the inside of the hall and installed new chairs, further enhancing the venue for all users to enjoy.

The village hall on Main Street is one of the only community spaces in West Leake other than the Parish Church and plays an invaluable role in the rural community. It’s used by local groups such as West Leake WI and hosts a weekly Pilates class.

The venue is available for private hire for parties, band practices and other celebrations. To find out more visit the West Leake Village Hall website.

It also hosts many social events such as quizzes, shows, games evenings and a breakfast event recently attended by RBC’s Deputy Leader Cllr Abby Brennan, residents and the Hall’s Committee Members.

Cllr Brennan said: “I enjoyed my recent visit to the breakfast event, and it was great to see the venue is well-loved and at the heart of the community here in West Leake.

“The village hall roof is the original built in 1850, and needed repairing to prevent leaking, damp and heat loss. Now with the improvement works complete it is hoped the parish committee will be able to see a difference in reduced heating bills and carbon emissions in line with our Carbon Clever priorities.

“Through REPF we’re supporting our rural areas, and this is a great example of how the funding has helped to improve this lively village hall with essential roof upgrades to help sustain the facility.

“The community can now continue to enjoy the venue as a warm and pleasant space to meet, socialise and enjoy even more events together.”

West Leake Village Hall Committee Chair Jeremy Murfitt added: “Like many small villages West Leake has an older traditional village hall. Maintaining the fabric of the building is our biggest challenge.

“The grant from Rushcliffe has enabled us to restore the roof which hadn't been touched for over 40 years. With the roof repaired we have also been able to decorate it.

“We have had great feedback from those attending the "Breakfast Sausage Sizzle" and we are confident the Hall will now get greater use.”
